A Stand for Working Families
Dear Friends:
This Missive comes with a particular sense of accomplishment for our campaign--the same feeling that follows hard work and honest effort.
On Monday, April 7, we posted to our website news that we had earned the support of Davis Firefighters Local 3494 along with the Sacramento Central Labor Council and the Napa-Solano Counties Central Labor Council and its affiliated United Workers for Local Government. They join our first labor supporters--the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 39 and the California Nurses Association.
On Tuesday, April 8, we received official word that the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California State Council had also endorsed our campaign. Representing more than 650,000 SEIU members in California, I am honored by their trust.
I am proud to have labor on our team, because I know that their support does not come easily. Labor support is not a handout--it's earned. Should I be privileged to serve the people of the 8th Assembly District, I will continue to address many of the core issues affecting working families--healthcare reform, public safety and emergency services, schools, and services to adults and the elderly, including veterans.
Thank you again for your support--we are now only 55 days from Election Day, June 3, 2008--and about 25 days from the arrival of Permanent Absentee Ballots. Stay tuned for more frequent announcements as this campaign goes down to the wire--and please email us at info@marikoyamada.net if you want to help!

Following the Money in the 8th AD
As we discussed immediately following the official filing date for this race, Mayor Cabaldon has refused the voluntary spending limit in this election. When asked about this by the West Sacramento News-Ledger, he responded with an "everyone's doing it" attitude and cited Dave Jones, Lois Wolk and Darrell Steinberg as examples of legislators who also do not accept such limits. The important distinction here is that these members are incumbents who are often asked to raise money for others, not just themselves.
The March 19th News-Ledger story also sheds some light on one of the sources of Mayor Cabaldon's impressive war chest.
ASB Properties, led by Republican developer David Stroud is West Sacramento's largest residential developer and a major bundler of campaign contributions to Mayor Cabaldon's Assembly campaign.
Stroud himself has given $7200 to Cabaldon (the maximum contribution limit for the June 3rd Primary is $3600, but Cabaldon has squeezed donors for early contributions to his general election in order to inflate his cash-on-hand numbers and intimidate opposing candidates and interest groups). Neva Hale, accountant of ASB has also given Cabaldon $7200, ASB partners Frank and Helen Andrews, names that may be more familiar to Solano County supporters have each given $3600.
B&L Properties of Vacaville, led by Republican Billy Yarbrough, and for whom the Yarbrough project is named, gave Cabaldon $7200, his wife Louise Yarbrough gave $7200 and their son-in-law Anthony Russo gave an additional $2000.
In just the contributions listed here, interests in ASB properties have donated $38,000 to Mayor Cabaldon's Assembly campaign. In the article Cabaldon argues that campaign contributions never have influenced his decisions or those decisions of any of his fellow councilmen and he refuses to recuse himself from the upcoming council deliberations on Yarbrough.
